Deepta Sateesh, currently Head of Strategic Development at the Srishti School of Art, Design & Technology, was invited to be a keynote speaker at the International Symposium on Sustainable Design, Recife, Brazil. The conference, held on 29th and 30th September 2011, and organized in conjunction with the Brazilian Symposium on Sustainable Design (SBDS), is the most important scientific event in South America on the issue of Sustainable Design. The event was hosted by the Federal University of Pernambuco, in the City of Recife, Brazil.

Under the theme “New Frontiers, New Challenges”, the third ISSD sought to integrate several scientific areas of knowledge in order to broaden design’s relationship with sustainability. The event brought together design professionals, academics, government and industry to discuss concepts, tools and methodologies on the design contribution towards a more sustainable society. Papers presented at the event were organized (but not limited) in the following research topics: (1) Sustainable Consumption and New Lifestyles, (2) Territory, Culture and Cultural Identity for Sustainability. (3) Tools and Methods for Sustainable Design, (4) Sustainable Products, Systems and Product-Service Systems, (5) New Sustainable Scenarios for Mobility, Food, Clothing and Shelter (6) Education for Sustainability (7) Sustainable Technologies, and (8) New Perspectives on Sustainability.
Deepta’s paper, “Beyond Sustainability – An Interdisciplinary Approach to Resilience”, addressed the importance of human adaptation to climate change, and building resilience by strengthening socio-ecological relationships. It covered an exploration of an interdisciplinary design approach – through the study of culture and traditional practices, philosophy, new fields of science and a redefinition of regions – that can contribute to policy-making and creating new macro-systems and frameworks that can drive human adaptation towards resilience.
